Your hardwood floors are scarred and you want them to look new again. How do you go about it? You might want to think about hardwood floor refinishing. This is a job that rejuvenates hardwood floors to their original state.
Having your hardwood floors restored sounds like a hard procedure, but it doesn`t have to be. You could always employ a professional floor refinisher, or you can do it on your own. First, remove all furniture from the room to be refinished. You will want to throughly sweep and clean the existing hardwood floor. Also, remove any nails or tacks. Keeping the room well ventilated, you want to begin with a 20-grit sandpaper attached to your floor sander. Start in the corner of the room, sanding the floor in an level movement following the woods normal grain. You can use a hand sander to get close to baseboards and directly into corners of the room.
Next, sweep any dust left after the sander. Follow the same procedure using a 60-grit sandpaper. Be sure to keep your work area well ventilated. Clean up any dust residue left behind. If necessary, you can use mineral drinks to clean up the floor, however, do not use water on raw wood.
If you have decided to stain the floor, now is the time. You want to apply the stain as evenly as possible starting in a far corner and working your way out of the area. Allow plenty of drying time for the stain before protecting.
After the stain has had time to dry, you will want to seal your hardwood floors with polyurethane. Again, starting in the farthest corner of the room and working your way out the door. Use a thick nap roller or a wool cover to apply the polyurethane. Allow the polyurethane time to dry between coats (anywhere from 6-12 hours, depending on the manufactures instructions). You will want to apply 3-6 applications for best results. Now, you can enjoy your newly refinished hardwood floors.
This procedure is time consuming, but well worth the work to restore those hardwood floors. If you follow these easy instructions, you will have beautiful results that you can be proud of. You will also be able to enjoy your hardwood floors for years to come.
